My spring jacket is done!

So you can see how it looks from the front and the back, and when it is open.

And if you are not a fan of the ‘action shot’ here it is on a hanger

It is my own design, but very much inspired and guided by this pattern and this jacket. It is made of nubby washed linen from Discount Fabrics in SOMA, lined with unbleached cotton, and closes with a great big jumbo sew-in snap. As someone who typically sews with brightly patterned fabric, I feel like it needs something–I almost sewed a button covered with patterned fabric over the snap, but decided that maybe it just wants to be white and simple and slightly monastic. Plus I can wear it over patterned things without clashing.

I’ve been paying more attention to finishing lately, partially because having a serger makes it easy, but also because I want the clothes I make to be durable. I dislike clothes that require overly fussy care (I wear them once and then they sit in dry-cleaning-pile limbo until I just give them away), so I aim to use washable fabrics and machine wash and dry them (just like I would if they were going in a load of laundry) before I start cutting or sewing. I used to balk at that step, but it makes a big difference when it comes to alleviating anxiety about actually wearing what I’ve made.

I have a fun wine-pairing cooking class tonight with two of my favorite girls, but no matter how washable, I’m thinking my jacket’s first outing should not involve red wine…
